About the data
Where the records come from, and what is missing
The source
Every record is from the Canadian Intellectual Property Office's trademarks researcher datasets, published under the Open Government Licence – Canada. The release used here runs to January 22, 2025; it is CIPO's latest public release (checked October 14, 2026). When CIPO publishes a newer one, the site is rebuilt from it.
That makes the site a snapshot. Marks filed, registered, abandoned or transferred since January 22, 2025 are not reflected. Each mark page links to its current record on CIPO's Canadian Trademarks Database.
What is on the site
- Every live mark: 715,809 registered and 249,116 applications still in progress, filed in any year.
- Left out: 1,053,629 closed files (abandoned, refused, expunged, withdrawn), and 36,322 design marks with no words, which cannot be found by name.
- Design marks are listed by the words in them, as CIPO indexes them. The images are on CIPO's record.
- Goods and services are cut short on the mark page; the full text is on CIPO's record.
- Owners that are companies or organizations have a page. An owner who is a person is shown as “an individual” and gets no page. A name we cannot tell either way is shown as “Owner not shown”. Trademark agents are never named.
How a search matches
Spelling and sound only. Meaning, translation and design are not compared.
- Same name: identical once capitals, accents and punctuation are set aside.
- Sounds the same: the same Soundex code for each word.
- Contains the name: a longer mark with the name inside it as whole words.
- Spelled close: at most about one letter in four changed.

Not legal advice
Finding a similar mark does not mean a name will conflict with it, and finding none does not mean a name is safe to use: unregistered marks, business names and trade names are not here, and confusion depends on more than spelling. A search here is not a clearance search. For a decision about a name, ask a registered trademark agent. The class pages explain what each class covers.
